NTRCA Members Donated Roof to Aledo Family Facing Extraordinarily Difficult Times

Last week, North Texas Roofing Contractors Association (NTRCA) members installed a completely donated roof (materials and labor) for an Aledo, Texas family who has faced extraordinarily difficult times. First, they were wiped out by the dad’s devastating terminal illness and death. And then 8 months later, the youngest son was diagnosed with brain cancer …

In September of 2017, Daniel Adams (the father and the Adams family sole provider) passed away after a two-year battle with a genetic liver disease. Tamela (mom) went to work to help keep food on the table for her three children, but the medical bills related to her husband’s illness still wiped out the family finances, including their home, investments and retirement savings.

In May 2018, just eight months after Daniel passed away, the family’s youngest son (Wilson Adams, age 11 now) was diagnosed with Medulloblastoma, a form of brain cancer. After surgery and ongoing treatment, his prognosis is good, but he is now legally blind and still has a long road ahead of him. His mom hasn’t been able to work due to his demanding treatment schedule and ongoing required care.

An organization called Wilson’s Warriors was formed last year, and through the generosity of many, it has helped raise donations to assist the family with living expenses so they can focus on supporting Wilson. The organization also set a larger goal: to build the Adams family a home so Tamela has a place to raise Wilson, his younger sister and his older brother.

Last week, NTRCA installed the donated roof on that home, which is in the process of being built, thanks to donations of labor, materials and money from generous local businesses and individuals.

NTRCA learned of the project and the family’s needs thanks to NTRCA member Robert Price of Lomanco Vents. Holly Green, an NTRCA past board president and the owner of Brettco Roofing then jumped on board to lead the project and donate all the roofing project labor. NTRCA member Atlas Roofing Corporation donated roofing materials and NTRCA member Builders First Source provided delivery and other roofing materials.

NBC, ABC and CBS all covered the story as NTRCA members came together to donate the roof to this amazing family.

"Community service is a major part of NTRCA's mission, and our members’ generosity is exemplified by members Brettco Roofing, Atlas Roofing, Builders First Source and Lomanco Vents,” said Karen Vermaire Fox, executive director of NTRCA.

“So often we look at people facing challenges and wish there was something meaningful or impactful that we could do,” said Holly Green, owner of Brettco Roofing. “In this case, there is, and it’s an honor to be one part of this amazing project to help this deserving family.”

Funds are still needed to cover labor for brick laying, painting and other services, and the organization is still raising money to help with the family’s ongoing needs on its Go Fund Me page.
