Bringing Roofing into More North Texas Classrooms

The North Texas Roofing Contractors Association (NTRCA), the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA), and Arrington Roofing had a great time connecting with educators at the SkillsUSA Texas LEAD Conference. Thank you to SkillsUSA Texas for welcoming us—and to the North Texas advisors who rolled up their sleeves to try applying TPO roofing membrane with us!

We enjoyed meeting advisors and exploring ways to introduce their students to roofing. A hands-on experience can start a conversation about a career path students may never have considered.

What is SkillsUSA?

SkillsUSA connects career and technical education students, teachers, and industry partners to help prepare students for careers in the skilled trades. Through leadership development and competitions at the regional, state, and national levels, students build skills and demonstrate what they have learned.

The SkillsUSA Texas LEAD Conference supports that work by bringing advisors and industry representatives together. It provides training and resources to help educators strengthen their chapters, prepare students for competitions, and build industry connections. For NTRCA, it was an opportunity to connect directly with the educators helping students explore their futures.

Putting Roofing Skills to the Test

SkillsUSA’s Commercial Roofing competition gives students a chance to demonstrate roofing skills in a practical setting. The national competition debuted in 2023 and has included students installing TPO roofing membrane on mockups used for NRCA’s PROCertification exams. Competitors put their training into practice while gaining exposure to professional installation standards.

Our TPO activity at the LEAD Conference gave advisors a hands-on introduction to this work and helped open the door to conversations about bringing roofing instruction and competition opportunities into more classrooms.

Local Companies Can Make a Difference

Building the next generation of roofing professionals starts with connections between schools and the people who do this work every day. Roofing companies can help by sharing their expertise, supporting hands-on training, donating materials, or helping students prepare for competition. NRCA also offers schools access to its TRAC TPO Installation training at no cost.

NTRCA looks forward to building on the relationships started at the conference and helping more North Texas students discover opportunities in roofing. Thank you to NRCA and Arrington Roofing for being part of the day!
